Frequently
Asked Questions

Q: How does the risk assessment work?

SkinVision’s clinically validated algorithm has been developed and tested in cooperation with dermatologists and is trained to assess photos of skin spots based on signs of skin cancer. The photos are processed through a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), a class of neural networks that is particularly suitable for classification tasks on image data. The algorithm provides an indication to label the level of risk of the specific skin spot. Based on the risk class, low, low (with symptoms) and high risk, the service we provide a supportive recommendation on the next steps to take.

Our skin checks do not intend to provide a medical diagnosis, nor replace visits to a healthcare professional.

Q: I have trouble using the camera. How can I take a photo?

To take the highest quality photos, please follow these instructions:

Attempt to take you photos in natural daylight, but indoors near a window or any brightly lit space will also work.
Move anything creating a shadow on your skin out of the way, including hair. Hold the camera between 10 and 20 cm from your skin spot and move slowly towards the skin until a blue ring appears.
Keep the camera still (try resting it against your body) and the picture is taken automatically.

Q: What if I get a high risk rating?

The vast majority of our users receive immediate peace of mind through a low risk indication. If you receive a high risk indication, we will follow up with recommended next steps. This may include a visual assessment by a healthcare professional, or a note to monitor the spot closely.

We recognise that in the COVID-19 situation, there can be difficulties with visiting healthcare facilities. Not all high-risk spots are skin cancer - our data shows that in one in three high-risk cases, treatment by a healthcare professional is needed. However, it is still recommended to follow all recommendations provided by the SkinVision Service to make sure that all potential risks are considered and acted upon.

Q: Does SkinVision replace the skin doctor?

SkinVision is not a diagnostic device and does not replace a visit to your doctor. SkinVision helps you to become more aware of your skin so you can visit a doctor in time, and prepared. If at any time you feel uncomfortable or you see that your skin spot is changing, irritating or bleeding, we recommend that you visit a medical specialist without hesitation.
